TRANSRECTAL ULTRASOUND & PROSTATE BIOPSY

The transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) examination of the prostate enables your physician to better evaluate prostatic changes suggested by an abnormal digital rectal examination (DRE) or an elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. The TRUS also permits accurate localization of the prostate which, in turn, allows for accurate biopsies of the gland. The TRUS/Bx procedure is performed in the office and does not require anesthesia.

PREPARATION:
  • On the day prior to the biopsy:
    1. Take Cipro 500 mg in the morning and in the evening.
    2. Eat and drink normally.
  • On the day of the biopsy:
    1. Take Cipro 500 mg in the morning and in the evening.
    2. Eat and drink normally up to the time of the biopsy.
    3. Self-administer one Fleet Enema just prior to coming in for the biopsy.
    4. Take all of your usual medications (except for blood thinners).
  • On the day after the biopsy:
    1. Take Cipro 500 mg in the morning and in the evening.
IMPORTANT: DISCONTINUE ASPIRIN AND PRODUCTS CONTAINING ASPIRIN 5 DAYS PRIOR TO BIOSPY. IF YOU TAKE COUMADIN OR OTHER BLOOD THINNERS, NOTIFY YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
